Another Reason To Be Happy

Stress Causes Fat to Stick Around

"Researchers at Ohio State University have found the first evidence that short periods of psychological stress can cause the body to take longer to clear heart-damaging fats from the bloodstream, according to a study published in the journal Psychophysiology.

The study of 70 healthy, middle-aged, nonsmoking men and women measured how quickly triglycerides - a type of fat linked to heart disease - cleared out of the bloodstream during a stressful test as compared to a period when the subjects rested. The results showed that, for all 70 participants, stress caused triglycerides to stay in the bloodstream longer.

In other words, 'if a person has a high-fat snack or meal during a time of stress, that fat is going to be circulating in the blood for a longer period of time,' says psychologist Catherine Stoney, Ph.D., lead author of the study."
