What Is Cholesterol Anyway?

According to mainstream media, cholesterol is public enemy number 1. But is it? Perhaps you, or certainly someone you know, is on at least one cholesterol lowering drug. But let's take at look at cholesterol and see just what it really is, and if it should be lowered in the body.

Cholesterol actually has many essential functions in the body. Cholesterol is found in every cell of your body where it assists in the production of cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D and bile acids that help digest fat.

Another major function of cholesterol is to help synthesize vitamin D — the essential vitamin that plays a pivotal role in almost all aspects of our health... it has been credited with boosting immunity, warding off cancer and much more... Too low cholesterol levels will prevent the production of sufficient levels of vitamin D, thus preventing the body from protecting itself from harmful invaders.

Our bodies also use cholesterol to produce virtually all steroid hormones, like oestrogen, testosterone, cortisone, and a host of other vital hormones.

It's also found in your brain where it helps with the formation of memories and is vital for neurological function.

Not only does your body use cholesterol for all these different functions, but it also produces it! That's right, your body makes this stuff because it needs it... only 25 per cent of blood cholesterol comes from food, the rest is produced by your liver and other cells in your body.

This essential life-force, which helps our bodies to function optimally (and heal themselves properly), has been turned into some kind of villain! Mainstream media thrives on promoting drugs to lower cholesterol, but does it truly need to be lowered? My opinion is that the promotion of cholesterol drugs is simply a con game. Read the following story here, by a doctor and see what he says about this issue.

Oats and Clogged Arteries

Already known for their ability to help lower cholesterol levels, oats may have additional cardiovascular benefits. A compound contained in oats may keep blood cells from sticking to artery walls, helping to prevent clogged arteries and atherosclerosis, according to research published in the June 2004 issue of Agricultural Research magazine (www.ars.usda.gov/is/AR)

Researchers from the Jean Mayer USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts University in Boston purified avenanthramides from oats and exposed them to human arterial wall cells for 24 hours. While observing the mixture under incubation, researchers found significant reductions in both the expression of adhesion molecules (that ‘glue’ blood cells to artery walls) and the sticking of blood cells to arterial wall cells. They concluded the adhesion suppression by the oat-compound may prevent the narrowing of artery walls caused by a buildup of blood cells and inflammation, which eventually leads to atherosclerosis.

Research has also proven fiber from oats help reduce LDL cholesterol, reiterating the heart-healthy benefits of oats. ‘Adding oat products as part of an overall healthy diet and cutting down on high-fat, high-cholesterol foods are important to gaining these benefits,’ said Mohsen Meydani, DVM, Ph.D., nutritionist, and lead researcher of the study.”
