According to mainstream media, cholesterol is public enemy number 1. But is it? Perhaps you, or certainly someone you know, is on at least one cholesterol lowering drug. But let's take at look at cholesterol and see just what it really is, and if it should be lowered in the body.

Cholesterol actually has many essential functions in the body. Cholesterol is found in every cell of your body where it assists in the production of cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D and bile acids that help digest fat.

Another major function of cholesterol is to help synthesize vitamin D — the essential vitamin that plays a pivotal role in almost all aspects of our health... it has been credited with boosting immunity, warding off cancer and much more... Too low cholesterol levels will prevent the production of sufficient levels of vitamin D, thus preventing the body from protecting itself from harmful invaders.

Our bodies also use cholesterol to produce virtually all steroid hormones, like oestrogen, testosterone, cortisone, and a host of other vital hormones.

It's also found in your brain where it helps with the formation of memories and is vital for neurological function.

Not only does your body use cholesterol for all these different functions, but it also produces it! That's right, your body makes this stuff because it needs it... only 25 per cent of blood cholesterol comes from food, the rest is produced by your liver and other cells in your body.
