Beating The Odds

The American Cancer Society estimates that one person dies of colorectal cancer every 9 minutes. No surprise really, due to the American diet. Colorectal cancer is the second most fatal cancer in men and third in women.

Ways to help prevent colon cancer include refusing red meat. Why? Because meat in general is very acidic, and red meat is higher in acidic nature than fish, chicken or turkey.

Red meat, unless verifiably organic, also is loaded with chemicals and hormones given to the cattle. But don't get the idea that fish, chicken and turkey are free of these chemicals. Organically grown should be, commercially grown never are free of them.

Chemicals are sprayed on, to help prevent flies and related critters, injected to give as anti-biotics and as hormone enhancers. Plus, these animals are generally eating foods grown on contaminated soil, and then sprayed with more contaminants. Chemicals are never healthy for any living creature.

Four steps you can take to improve your colonic health are:

1. Get more fiber in the diet. Natural fiber direct out of raw foods is best, but supplements will do. Just be sure if you take this in capsule form, they do not have magnesium stearate, or stearic acid as part of the capsule or fiber formula. Very harmful to the health.

2. High quality oils, such as Coconut, Olive, Fish, Flax and Borage are essential for protecting your colon from cancer, and other abnormalities. Several studies have shown that the more fish oil you consume, the better your chance of staying cancer free.

However, be aware that some fish oils have added vitamin A. Too much vitamin A will be a problem, if taken for long. The body can overdose on direct vitamin A. However, it cannot overdose on beta-carotenes, or any carotenes. The body creates the vitamin A from the carotenes as needed.

Too much vitamin A will cause liver toxicity, and a general feeling of disease. Just be aware..

3. Taking probiotics are very helpful, to keep the beneficial bacteria populated in the colon, and to help keep the harmful bacteria in check. Harmful bacteria includes candida, which is always in your digestive tract.

4. Getting enough enzymes is crucial to your digestive health, in fact, your health in general. Any food you consume should also include live enzymes. Canned and cooked foods do not have live enzymes. Enyzmes include Protease, Lipase, Amylase, Lactase, Cellulase, and Invertase.

Vegetarian foods generally help the body keep cancer away, and help if you do have cancer. For instance, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, pigments found in spinach, broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes, and carrots, have been shown to reduce colon cancer. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2000)

In 2004, the Journal of Clinical Nutrition, at the UCLA Center For Human Nutrition, found the protective effects of Calcium and vitamin D work(when taken together) to offer some serious protection against colon cancers.

This has been said before in my blogs, but it bears repeating. You should have a minimum of 2 bowel movements per day, and 3 is preferable, to help maintain good health. Considering colon cancer starts in the digestive system, and the digestive system comprises roughly 80% of our immune system, does this not make extremely good sense?
