Ants In The House?

If you live outside a community with trees, it is very likely you may have an ant problem in the springtime. Ants are kinda simple creatures, that spend their winters in a warmer place, since they cannot tolerate temperature extremes on either side of the scale. In other words, they would be living in your walls, floors, or ceilings. They have food stored up which gets them most of the way through the winter season, but about now in the pacific northwest is when they may start showing up. So how to get them out of the house?

There is more than one way, without using chemicals. One of the most effective methods is to mix raw honey with about 1/5th to 1/4 as much borax. You want enough borax to kill them, but not enough to kill them before they make it back to the queen. Ants scouring your house will take any food back, and give some of it to the queen.

I use honey because the borax mixes well with it, and ants would be more likely to consume raw honey than canned, which is generally what you would find in most stores. Some health stores will carry raw honey. If they are hungry enough, they will eat most anything you would eat. You must kill the queen and the rest of the colony if you want them out of your house. If you don't kill the rest of the colony, another female will take over as queen, and continue producing more ants. Of course, when warmer temperatures arrive, they will be outside most of the time anyway.
