While there are many ways of getting insects to leave one alone, most of what Americans use are chemical sprays. They do work. But they also harm your health. So what do you do instead?
You can put certain plants around your house and garden to repeal critters like the mosquito(I've heard this is Alaska's state bird); such as Citronella or Lemongrass. Ants don't care for Peppermint; rats and mice(yes, I know, these are not insects) don't care for Catnip.
Putting a good grade of Eucalyptus oil on your skin will slow down the mosquitoes bothering you, and using a diffuser for the oil in your bedroom at night can help you get some rest since they are not likely to stay in your bedroom.
Putting up bat houses can help with mosquitoes as well, since they are one of the mosquitoes natural predators. Bats will not generally bother humans, unless of course, a bat becomes rabid. Not many are rabid, so your chances of being bitten by one are slim. You are more likely to be bitten by a neighbors dog than you are a bat.
This video shows how to make a mosquito trap very inexpensively. Of course, they don't talk on the video, so you have to read the text below.
