In the northern hemisphere, a moderate amount of people get depression in the winter months. While many medical doctors either don't understand or don't wish to tell, actually, the problem is fairly obvious. The lack of sunlight. And while this may not be the entire cause of wintertime depression, it is a major cause.
Sunlight, or the vitamin D gained from sun exposure, has been labeled the Happy Vitamin. I have talked with people who have switched to full spectrum lighting in the winter months, which changed their attitudes. Many times, profoundly for the better.
Since in the northern hemisphere, you are not going to get any real vitamin D from the sun in the winter months, it is a wise choice to get tested by your doctor to see what your "D" levels are, then if need be, take a vitamin D3 supplement. You never want D2, as it is a chemical. Tanning beds can also help give you quality vitamin D.
If you would like more information on vitamin D, and the required needs of the body for this vitamin, visit Dr Mercola's website, and key in "vitamin d" into the search bar. Dr Mercola has been instrumental in getting some very valuable information to the public on this and in many other areas of health. Although I may not always completely agree with him, I do highly endorse him.
And remember, vitamin D3 is very powerful in helping prevent cancers. If you are thinking sunlight causes cancer, you have been misled. Too much sun exposure can "lead" to cancer, it does not CAUSE cancer. And yet, if you consume a food(s) high in carotenes for at least 3 weeks prior to being in the sun, your risk of even getting sunburnt is slim. Chlorella is very potent in preventing sunburn. Buy it in the powdered form, put about a tablespoon in a glass of non-chlorinated water, sip and hold in the mouth for several seconds before swallowing. Holding in the mouth is very important. Here's why:
1. Chlorella is your highest source of vitamin B-12, short of eating raw meat. B-12 is destroyed by stomach acids. It is absorbed rapidly under the tongue.
2. Chlorella is a very high source of protein, which also is absorbed best in the mouth.
3. Chlorella is a very high source of essential fatty acids, which work better when held in the mouth first.
4. Chlorella is an almost perfect food, with all the necessary amino acids, all B vitamins in the proper ratio necessary for human health, is a far better source of calcium than cows milk, and has the magnesium, unlike cows milk, which is necessary to absorb and utilize the calcium. A good information site on Chlorella can be found here.
